Immunisation

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way of protecting against harmful diseases.

Our immunisation program offers the vaccinations listed under the National Immunisation Program Schedule and operates within the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) guidelines.

Meningococcal vaccines

From 1 July 2020, our Immunisation team will offer vaccination against Meningococcal B.

The vaccine is free for Indigenous children under 2 years of age and people with specific medical conditions. For all other infants, children, adolescent and young adults wishing to be vaccinated, the vaccine can be purchased for $98 per dose from any of our Community Immunisation Clinics.

Multiple doses may be required and the vaccine can be administered at the same time as other vaccines listed on the National Immunisation Schedule (from six weeks of age).

It is recommended to administer paracetamol to children less than two years of age approximately 30 minutes before receiving the Meningococcal B vaccine.

Influenza

The 2021 Influenza vaccine is available at all of our Immunisation Clinics.

The vaccine is free for people at high risk of influenza, see below for eligibility. If you are not deemed to be high risk, there is a cost of $10 per dose.

Influenza Vaccine is free for:

people aged 65 years and over
pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
children aged 6 months to less than 5 years
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (aged 6 months and over)
people with medical conditions listed in the table below

Renal disease	Chronic renal failure
Haematological disorders	Haemoglobinopathies
Long-term aspirin therapy in children aged 6 months to 10 years	These children are at increased risk of Reye syndrome following influenza infection

Community immunisation clinics

We run a number of weekly immunisation clinics across the city. These clinics offer all vaccinations listed on the National Immunisation Schedule and also, a number of vaccines available for purchase.

No appointment is required but we encourage you to arrive at least 20 minutes before closing time. Please bring your Medicare card, photo ID and your child’s child health book if applicable.

Our clinics are closed on Public Holidays.

Christmas and New Year Immunisation Clinics - All clinics will be closed from Monday 20 December 2021 and reopen Wednesday 5 January 2022

If you are ineligible for free vaccination under the National Immunisation Schedule, you can purchase the vaccines listed below at any of our community immunisation clinics.

We have cash and eftpos facilities available on-site.

Depending on the vaccine, multiple doses may be required. Vaccines not subject to GST.

Consent forms

You will need to complete a consent form before you or your child can be vaccinated. Consent forms are available at all clinics, or you can download one and fill it in before your visit.

School Immunisation Program

Every year, we provide vaccinations to Year 7 and Year 10 students in their school setting. In 2021, vaccination against Human Papilloma Virus and Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis is offered to all Year 7 students and vaccination against Meningococcal ACWY is offered to all Year 10 students.

During the first week of school, your child will be given a consent form from the school. Please fill this in and return it to the school as soon as possible. If you aren’t provided this form, please use the link below and either return the completed form to your child’s school or email it to immunisation@logan.qld.gov.au.

If you would prefer, your child can get these vaccines through our community immunisation clinics.

Immunisation records

The Australian Immunisation Register is a national register administered by Medicare. Historically, this register recorded vaccines given to children under 10 years of age. In 2016, it became a whole-of-life register.

Requesting records

The quickest and easiest way to access your immunisation records is online. Log into your Medicare online account through myGov or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app.

If you would like a record of vaccines given only by Logan City Council, you will need to download and fill in the Immunisation records request form (PDF 196 KB). Send the completed form with a certified copy of your identification to Immunisation@logan.qld.gov.au. Your request will be processed within 14 days.

We must act in line with the Information Privacy Act 2009 and will not process your request without certified identification.

A certified copy of identification is a copy of an original identification document that has been verified as a true copy by an authorised witness. Suitable identification documents include your driver’s licence (copy of front and back), passport or birth certificate. Authorised witnesses include lawyers, Justices of the Peace or Commissioners for Declarations. The person witnessing the document will need to see your original identification document.

If you don’t have a certified copy of an identification document, you can visit one of our customer service centres and a council officer can photocopy and validate your identification (such as your driver’s licence, passport or birth certificate).

Updating the Australian Immunisation Register

Vaccines administered by Logan City Council

The Australian Immunisation Register currently lists vaccines given as part of the School Immunisation Program since 2018.

The previous Queensland register, the Vaccine Information and Vaccine Administration System (VIVAS), is gradually being transferred to the Australian Immunisation Register.

If your immunisations (or your child’s immunisations) are not listed on the Australian Immunisation Register and you would like us to update your record, please email the immunisation team at immunisation@logan.qld.gov.au and include the following information:

full name and date of birth
Medicare number
school name.

Vaccines administered overseas

If you or your child received vaccines overseas and would like these recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register, please email the immunisation team at immunisation@logan.qld.gov.au and include the following information:

full name and date of birth
Medicare number
copy of the immunisation record.

Resolving Centrelink and Medicare notices

If Centrelink or Medicare have sent you a letter about your child’s overdue vaccines, follow the steps below to resolve the issue.

If you missed a vaccination - take your child to one of our immunisation clinics or your doctor to catch up
If your child is fully vaccinated, but:
- Medicare online shows there are outstanding vaccinations - contact the healthcare provider who gave your child the vaccination and ask them to send the details to the Australian Immunisation Register
- Medicare online is up to date, but Centrelink has sent you a letter saying vaccinations are overdue - make sure you have given Centrelink permission to access your child’s immunisation records. Call Centrelink or Medicare to have them link your records
- If your child was born and vaccinated overseas - you need to have your records added to the Australian Immunisation Register. You can email your child’s full name, date of birth, Medicare number, and a copy of the immunisation recordy to us at immunisation@logan.qld.gov.au.

Vaccine monitoring and surveillance

We use a text message service called SmartVax to follow up with people who have had a vaccination.

Participation in the text messaging service is not compulsory.

The text message service will ask whether you (or your child) experienced any reaction to the vaccination.

If anyone responds saying they experienced a reaction, they will be sent an SMS link to a one-minute online survey, which asks for more details. We are notified about any reactions reported, and any information about suspected serious reactions may be shared with public health authorities. This information is used to monitor vaccine safety.
